SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A Victorville man who murdered his girlfriend and then fled to Oklahoma was convicted Friday.
A jury found 46-year-old Saul Ricks, Jr. guilty of one count of second degree murder. He faces ____ years in state prison when sentenced June 29.
In Oct. 2017, 46-year-old Veda Mims, of Victorville, was found deceased in her apartment after sheriff’s deputies responded to a family member’s request to conduct a welfare check.
According to Deputy DA Sheila Monjazeb, who prosecuted the case, the cause of death was later determined to be manual strangulation.
“At some point during the relationship, the defendant started to get angry, because he thought the victim was talking to other men behind his back,” said Deputy DA Monjazeb.
During trial it was noted that on the day of the murder, the defendant and the victim started arguing. The defendant then started beating the victim.
“Based on the blood in the different rooms of the apartment, the beating took place all over the home,” said DDA Monjazeb. “However, this was not enough for the defendant so he strangled the victim to death, choking and grabbing her neck so hard that he broke her hyoid bone.”
Following the murder, Ricks fled to Oklahoma City. He was later apprehended by members of the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Detail with the assistance of the United States Marshalls Fugitive Task Force in Oklahoma. This case was investigated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Homicide Division.
