The Case of Rival Gang Members

In July 2000, Michael Russell got into a physical fight with a rival gang member. After the fight, Michael verbally disrespected him in front of everyone. A month later, Michael was standing outside near his apartment with five of his friends when an unknown black male adult walked up to him. The suspect asked him if he was Michael. When Michael answered yes, the suspect shot Michael in the neck killing him. During the investigation, witnesses were uncooperative due to their gang affiliations or they were afraid of retaliation.

In 2008, Dashon Parker wrote a letter asking to speak with a homicide detective. Detectives Greg Myler and Robert Alexander picked up the case. When Dashon was interviewed he confessed to killing Michael. Dashon said he shot Michael in retaliation for the earlier fight involving his homeboy.

Myler and Alexander showed photo line-ups of Dashon to numerous witnesses. Two witnesses positively identified Dashon as the shooter. Nearly eight years after the murder occurred, Deputy District Attorney John Thomas issued an arrest warrant for PC 187 (Murder). Dashon was arrested in state prison while serving a lengthy prison sentence for an unrelated robbery.

On April 9, 2010, Dashon plead guilty to 2nd degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
