The explosion of Internet usage and the availability of on-line public records, coupled with the ease of stealing a person’s confidential information, have contributed greatly to dramatic increases in the crime of identity theft. Suspects often go unidentified, as it takes highly skilled investigators, competent in high technology criminal investigation methods, to track, locate and identify the suspects. Collecting evidence to prove the crime sufficiently in court is another difficult task investigators must undertake.
Any person who has been the victim of ID Theft is encouraged to file a police report with the appropriate police agency where jurisdiction of the crime can be established. If sufficient information and evidence is obtained by the local police agency, they will forward the case to the District Attorney’s Office Identity Theft Prosecution Unit for prosecutorial review.
The District Attorney’s Office is committed to aggressively prosecuting identity theft offenders and continues working to obtain justice for the victims of crime.
